“I see sequences and asana as chords.” Krishna Venkatesh

Krishna is a professional composer and musician who infuses his passion and talent for music with his love for the practice of yoga. Prior to finding yoga, Krishna led a successful international music career that spanned over 28 years. In that time, Krishna went from performing with multiple bands to composing music for television and film as a staff musician for the music houses Human Music and Sound Design, JSM and Tone Farmer. His work also included remixing, programming, producing and arranging music for artists such as Herbie Hancock, Joe Strummer and the Blue Man Group.

With his music career accelerating, Krishna began his yoga journey in 2008 after unbearable pain from a back injury led him to an Iyengar Yoga Restorative class. After several months of learning to move mindfully and therapeutically the pain from his injury subsided as his love for yoga grew.

After exploring various Hatha Yoga styles including Iyengar, Ashtanga, and breath-based yoga (Viniyoga), Krishna’s search led him to Charlotte Chandler Stone, CYT, E-RYT500, the founder and director of the Stone Center for Yoga & Health in Teaneck, New Jersey. Under Charlotte’s guidance, Krishna immersed himself in the study of Stone Yoga, a therapeutic and highly adaptive yoga style accredited by the National Yoga Alliance, which helped him heal his back and see yoga – and life – in a new light.

Krishna successfully completed the Stone Yoga Teacher Training in February 2012 and has been teaching ever since. Krishna is an ERYT 200-hour Yoga Alliance registered yoga instructor.

With a focus on precise yet adaptive alignment, pranayama, and above all, safety, Krishna believes in teaching to the student. With Krishna’s passion for both music and yoga, he offers a unique perspective that is evident through inspirational Dharma talks combining yogic philosophy with the poetry of music. Furthermore, Krishna’s vinyasa sequences and musical accompaniments are mindfully selected to support and continue the theme through the remainder of the class. Krishna teaches both group and private classes throughout Bergen County, New Jersey and the surrounding areas.

Krishna also leads workshops and special events that feature musical themes and genres. His latest workshop, Soul Food, intertwines R&B and Funk music from the 70s with mixed level flowing vinyasa.

In addition to teaching, Krishna continues to compose music. Most recently, Krishna has worked with yoga kirtan artist David Durga Das Newman on his album “ReBliss” for White Swan, the premier yoga music record label. Krishna also composed the music for the popular yoga documentary feature film "ENLIGHTEN UP - A Skeptic’s Journey into the World of Yoga”.

Krishna is eternally grateful to his teachers, having studied and/or taken workshops with: Charlotte Chandler Stone (Stone Yoga), Colleen Briscoe
